Did you know there’s an election happening right now that’s critical to the future of California and the Democratic Party?
What is it?
Every two years, the California Democratic Party holds Assembly District Election Meetings (ADEM elections). Each Assembly District elects 14 delegates who play a major role in shaping the direction and future of California’s Democratic Party.
What do ADEM delegates do?
Ever wonder how State and Federal candidates get the official “Democratic Party” stamp of approval during election season? These delegates (also known as Assembly District Delegates) are in charge of those endorsements — meaning they ultimately choose the Democratic candidate for both state and federal offices, including State Assembly, State Senate, Governor, U.S. House of Representatives, and the U.S. Senate. (The Alameda County Democratic Central Committee (ACDCC) plays the same role, but for local elections.)
How to vote?
Voting in the ADEM election is separate from your normal voter registration. In order to vote in the ADEMs, you need to register for an online ballot by January 31. You also need to be a registered Democrat.
Confirm or update your normal voter registration to Democrat. You must be a registered Democrat to vote, which may take 3-5 days to process
Register for an online ADEM ballot by January 31
Wait for your voting credentials to arrive via USPS in early February
Once you receive your credentials in the mail, sign in and cast your online ballot by February 23
Did Empower Oakland run an endorsement process?
No, we did not run a formal endorsement process for ADEMs.
However, a number of friends and volunteers of Empower Oakland are on the ballot. They have chosen to be part of 14-person slates that they believe share their values and priorities for what good governance in California can look like.
The slates for AD-14 and AD-18 are further below. When you cast your ballot, you are able to vote for up to 14 candidates (not just one!).
Bigger picture
The California Democratic Party holds enormous power over who ends up in public office. That’s why your vote in this high-impact, low-turnout election matters so much. Now more than ever, it’s important that we elect good leaders that represent and fight for the values we want to see in office.

How long do these Assembly District Delegates serve for? Same question for the Alameda County Democratic Central Committee (ACDCC) delegates?
